The Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog breed in the United States, Canada, and Australia. Labradors are very loving, loyal, and people-oriented dogs. They can be yellow, black, or chocolate in color and they shed seasonally, making them require regular grooming. The male is typically between 22.5 and 24.5 inches at the shoulder and the female is between 21.5 and 23.5 inches. Males typically weigh between 65-80 pounds and females are 55-70 pounds. They are often used as guide dogs for the blind and as part of search and rescue teams. They are originally from Newfoundland and were first used by fisherman to help pull in nets and catch fish. Labrador Retrievers are good for active people and families. They can be easily trained because of their even temperaments, making them a beloved pet by many.
The Golden Retriever is a dog that was historically used for retrieving waterfowl including ducks and other birds. They are named retriever because of their ability to return the game undamaged to the hunter. They are well suited to suburban or country locations, but need a substantial amount of exercise. They are very intelligent and often are used as service dogs for the blind and deaf. They are also commonly used for hunting, search and rescue and drug detection. Golden Retrievers are popular dogs for families because of their gentle temperament and are the fourth most popular household dog in the United States. They have light to dark golden fur; the topcoat is water-resistant and wavy, and the undercoat is soft and keeps the dog cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Males are 23 to 24 inches in height at the shoulder and females are 21.5 to 22.5 inches in height. Weight for males is usually between 65 and 75 pounds, and females are 55 to 65 pounds. They are originally thought to be from Scotland where waterfowl hunting was very popular.
The German Shepherd dog is a large breed that originated in Germany. They are very strong and intelligent, and are consequently used frequently as military and police dogs. Due to its loyal and protective nature, the German Shepherd breed is one of the most registered dog breeds. This breed of dog is also energetic and is a good guard dog. Some can be pure black, whereas others coats have beige and brown. The German Shepherd has large, upright ears and a bushy tail. The Doberman Pinscher is one of the most common of dog breeds, and they are regarded as being very intelligent and loyal. The breed was first bred in Germany around 1890. They have a very gentle disposition making them suitable for family companionship due to careful breeding. They are a medium sized dog, the male is typically 26 to 28 inches and the female is 24 to 26 inches. The male generally weighs between 70 and 90 pounds and the female between 60 and 90 pounds. Doberman coats are black/blue or fawn. They are very smart, making them pick up on instructions quickly, resulting in very obedient family dogs. Although the majority of the breed does have a gentle temperament, some can be aggressive towards strangers and other animals.
The Standard Poodle is the oldest of the three types of poodles, which include Standard, Miniature and Toy. Poodles are used as retrievers by hunters. Their curly textured coat is water resistant which helps them with swimming. They can have light or dark fur, and may be solid or multicolored. The Standard Poodle is 15 inches and is squarely built. They are a very active and intelligent dog, making them well-suited for families. They are highly energetic and get bored easily, so they require an active owner.
