Dogs - Small Breeds
The Shih Tzu is known for its long double coat and its compact build. “Shih Tzu” means lion and it proves true in this breed’s sparky personality. They are sweet and playful, and come in a variety of different colors. They are 8 to 11 inches and weigh approximately 9 to 16 pounds. They are one of the most popular breeds of dog in the United States. This breed has been designed to be a house pet and companion, so it does not require too much exercise or time outdoors.
The Chihuahua is the smallest breed of dog and is named after the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. Chihuahuas can vary greatly in appearance, with their coats being long or short and a variety of colors. Their weight does not usually exceed 6 pounds. The temperament of this breed varies considerably; with ill-tempered ones that attack and would be unsuitable for homes with other pets or small children. Other Chihuahuas love to cuddle and are very even tempered making them great family pets if the right one is chosen. They require little exercise because of their small size, and make good city or apartment dogs.
Yorkshire Terriers are a breed of small terriers, developed in Yorkshire, England. They were initially developed to clear and catch rats in clothing mills. The breed is only 3 to 7 pounds and has a multicolored coat. Their coat is their pride and joy and has to be kept glossy. They do not shed very much and have been referred to as hypoallergenic, which makes them good for people who are allergic to dogs. Yorkshire Terriers are fun and energetic, but do not require too much exercise because of their small size. This breed does tend to bark a lot, so keep that in mind if you live in an apartment or townhouse.
West Highland Terrier
The West Highland Terrier is also known as a Westie. It is a Scottish dog with a distinct white coat. Their double coat is glossy and medium length. Males are typically 11 inches and females are 10 inches. The temperament of this breed varies greatly, with some being good around small children and others preferring to be in solitude. They can be somewhat possessive around food and toys, making guarding an issue. Terriers can be somewhat stubborn making them a bit more difficult to train than other breeds.
The Pomeranian (also commonly referred to as a Pom Pom) is from Central Europe. It is classified as a toy dog because of its small size, weighing only 3- 7.7 pounds and being only 5 to 11 inches tall. They have a textured double coat that can come in a variety of different colors. They are a very friendly breed of dog that loves to be around their owners. They may have issues with barking, so that needs to be addressed early on to be corrected. Pomeranians are intelligent and responsive to training. They are a great pet for someone who is single and can devote a lot of time to this highly protective dog.
